We offer this site as a handy source of information for boys in the East Bay who are looking for a troop to join. It's also helpful to Troop 221 scouts and their families who want to keep up with Troop activities.
Troop 221 was founded in 1955, serving youth in Central Contra Costa County. The troop has a long history of scouting excellence, service and tradition for over 50 years!
The Troop meets every Monday from 7:15-8:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Congregational Church, our Chartered Organization. Meeting activities planned by the Scouts themselves include learning and practicing Scouting skills, planning outings and service projects, advancement, working on merit badges or other projects of interest, leadership, games, and fun.
The Troop is divided into patrols of 5 to 8 boys. Patrols hold Patrol Meetings and may plan additional Patrol outings. Patrol Leaders, along with the Senior Patrol Leader and Troop Guides, work with new Scouts to pass along scouting skills, leadership and values.
Boy Leadership and Strong Values
Troop 221 is a boy-run Troop. Boy leaders plan and execute their own program, with guidance and support from trained Adult Leaders, many of whom are Eagle Scouts. New Scouts begin with smaller jobs and later are given more responsible positions as their skills and knowledge progress.
The boys who run the Troop are those in the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC). The PLC consists of the Senior Patrol Leader, his assistants (experienced Scouts) and the Patrol Leaders. This group meets once a month to plan the Troop’s weekly meetings, outings and service projects.
Learning leadership skills and strong values are some of the most important benefits of being a Boy Scout. Troop 221 has a junior leader-training program for the boys. Each Scout learns the skills needed to carry out his job in the Troop and learns how to pass those skills on to other boys. The Troop conducts in-house leadership training programs and also participates in the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) program, held by the District twice a year.
Monthly Outings
Troop 221 has a year-round outings program with day and/or overnight outings monthly. The Scouts themselves plan the events. Recent Troop outings include Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, Fort Ross, Hearst Castle, Mission Peak, Mt. Diablo, Mt. St. Helena, Mt. Whittenberg, Ohlone Wilderness, Pinnacles, Pt. Reyes, Trinity Alps, USS Hornet, and snow camping, skiing and snow boarding in the Sierra Nevada. The Troop, or any of its patrols, may plan day hikes, outings or other activities during the year. Examples include cycling trips, ice-skating, rock climbing and hiking. It is important to note that many of the outings are planned so that the Troop’s scouts can participate in school-music programs and seasonal sports without feeling left out of the Scouting program.
Summer Camps and High Adventure
Troop 221 attends Camp Wolfeboro annually, which is located on the Stanislaus River in the Sierra Nevada . In addition to Wolfeboro, the Troop attends other camps each summer. The Troop attended Camp Chawanakee on Shaver Lake (2001, 2002, 2005), Camp Tahquitz in the San Bernardino Mountains (2003), and Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island (2004, 2007, and again in 2010).
Troop 221 also offers high-adventure programs including an annual 50-mile backpacking trip and rock climbing trips. Past fifty-milers included the Lost Coast, Emigrant Wilderness, Mt. Lassen, and Tuolumne Meadows to Mammoth. Older scouts participated in a twelve-day high-adventure trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 2002, 2004, and 2007. The Troop has another Philmont trek scheduled for 2010.
Community Service
Troop 221 is committed to participating in community service. The Troop participates in service projects throughout the year, which are planned and executed by the Scouts. Annual service projects include Scouting for Food, Flags at Oakmont Cemetery on Memorial and Veterans’ Days and adopting needy families during the holidays through the Volunteer Center of Contra Costa County Adopt-a-Family program. Other recent service projects include gardening and maintenance at Hillcrest Congregational Church, Concord Childcare Center, Martinez and Pleasant Hill Senior Centers, Angel Island, and Fort Ross.
